Description
A Reflux or Non-Return Valve allows media (typically water or non-corrosive fluids) to flow in only one direction and closes automatically when flow reverses, preventing backflow and protecting pumps, equipment, and pipelines. This valve type is a swing check design, where a hinged disc swings open with forward flow and quickly closes with reverse flow.
Construction & Materials
Body: Cast Iron (CI) for durability and economy
Disc / Sealing: Cast Iron / Rubber-lined / Bronze or Stainless Steel options (disc-face material varies per spec)
Hinge & Pin: Stainless Steel (e.g., SS410)
Seat / Ring: Metal seat or resilient (rubber) seating for tighter shut-off
Standards & Ratings
Design Standard: IS 5312 Part 1 (Swing Check / Reflux NRV)
End Connection: Flanged (typically IS 1538 Table IV / VI drilling)
Pressure Class: PN10 / PN16 (Class 125) typical; other ratings may be available
Sizes & Operating Conditions
Size Range: Roughly 40 mm to 1500 mm (1½″ to ~60″) depending on model and availability
Temperature: Up to approx 50–65 °C (standard water service); options available for higher temp with different materials
Key Features
✔ Prevents backflow and protects pumps/equipment
✔ Automatic operation (no external power/actuation needed)
✔ Swing check design with minimal pressure drop
✔ Robust CI construction for long life and low maintenance
✔ Suitable for clear water / potable lines with turbidity up to ~3000 ppm
Typical Applications
Water supply & distribution systems
Pump discharge & suction lines (to prevent reverse flow)
Irrigation systems
Firefighting mains
Industrial process lines (non-corrosive)
How It Works (Operating Principle)
When fluid flows forward, the swing-type disc swings open allowing flow through. If the flow reverses or stops, gravity and backpressure force the disc shut, preventing reverse flow — hence the name reflux or NRV.
Advantages
Simple, automatic one-way flow control
Low head loss during normal operation
Sturdy design with interchangeable components
Quiet closing and reduced water hammer compared to some check valves
