Description
A butterfly valve is a quarter-turn valve that uses a disc rotating about its stem axis to throttle, start, or stop fluid flow. butterfly valves are compact, lightweight, and easy to install, suitable for ducting flow lines where space, quick action, and tight shut-off are needed. Unlike other valves, the disc stays in the flow path even when fully open.
Typical Construction & Materials
-
Body Materials:
-
Ductile Iron / Cast Iron / Carbon Steel / Stainless Steel / Aluminium alloy (varies by series)
-
-
Disc: Stainless Steel / Ductile Iron with coating / Aluminium Bronze
-
Seat/Liner: EPDM / NBR / PTFE / RPTFE (rubber or polymer) for resilient sealing
-
Stem: Stainless Steel (SS304/SS420/SS410)
-
Packing: PTFE / rubber for stem sealing
Standards & Connections
-
Designed to API 609, MSS SP-67, ISO 5752/EN 558 standards for butterfly valves
-
End Connections:
-
Wafer (fits between flanges)
-
Lug (allows dead-end service)
-
Flanged (ANSI / JIS / EN) depending on model
-
-
Mounting Pad: ISO 5211 for actuator compatibility
Pressure & Temperature Ratings
General ranges (specific model dependent):
-
Pressure Rating: PN10 / PN16 / ASME Class 150 (approx. up to ~1.6 MPa)
-
Service Temperature: approx. -29 °C to +200 °C (with PTFE/RPTFE seats; EPDM/NBR vary)
Performance & Features
✔ Quarter-turn operation for fast open/close action
✔ Bi-directional sealing for dead-end service (with lug type)
✔ Low operating torque for easy manual or actuated control
✔ Resilient seat for reliable bubble-tight shut-off
✔ Compact and lightweight design saves space and installation cost
✔ Suitable for both on/off and throttling applications
✔ Optional extended neck helps insulation and reduces condensation in cold fluid service
